GuardRite® Light Duty Barrier System Frequently Asked Questions
Product Basics
Q: What is the GuardRite Light Duty Barrier System?
A: The GuardRite Light Duty Barrier System is a modular barrier system that can be used to define and separate work areas, walkways, and storage areas. It can be easily sized and configured at the time of installation to fit a wide variety of applications. This system can also be easily modified or relocated if needed.
Q: What the GuardRite Light Duty is not?
A: The GuardRite Light Duty product was not designed to meet any specific building codes. It is not able to stop a fork truck.
Q: Where and when should the GuardRite Light Duty barrier be used?
A: The GuardRite Light Duty Barrier System can be used wherever you need to separate work areas, walkways or storage areas. It provides an economic alternative to traditional steel guard rail. Consider the GuardRite Light Duty Barrier System in areas that are currently designated by only a painted yellow line. It provides an effective visual and physical barrier to keep people and materials in the right place. Use GuardRite Strap or traditional GuardRite Steel in applications that need to guide and stop fork trucks.
Q: What are the base components of the GuardRite Light Duty?
A: The standard GuardRite Light Duty system is made up of three main components:
• Safety yellow powder coat painted steel columns: 43” tall x 5” diameter x 16 gauge with a 8” x 8” x 1/4” steel base plate.
• Extruded white rails: 7” high x 3” wide x 9’6” long with 4” high safety striping on one side.
• 7” high or 43” high rail supports.
Q: What hardware is supplied with GuardRite Light Duty Barrier?
A: Each column is supplied with two 1/2” x 5 3/4” anchors for securing column to floor.
• Each 7” high rail support is supplied with three self-tapping screws to secure it to the columns.
• Each 43” high rail support is supplied with six self-tapping screws.
• Each rail is supplied with four wood screws.
There are four holes in the base plates of the columns and we recommend installing the two anchors in diagonal holes if possible.
Q: What additional components are available?
A: A 6” high x 3” wide extruded vinyl rail with 4” safety striping on one side is available that can be stacked below the standard 7” high rail. When stacked, the rails slide together and interlock. Multiple 6” rails can be stacked below the 7” rail.
A 43” high post column extension is available for applications where greater height is required. The extension will slide into the standard 43” base post column.
Impactability
Q: What are the characteristics of the GuardRite Light Duty as it relates to impact?
A: The GuardRite Light Duty can withstand a minimum of 200 pounds of force from any direction with very little deflection. While it is not intended to be a lift truck impact barrier, the rails will absorb minor impact from carts without damage. After sustaining an incidental impact, the rails will return to their original shape without damage.
Applications
Q: Why do you have 7" rail supports and 43" full height rail supports. When should I use which?
A: Most applications will have two rails between posts and the 7" rail supports will be most cost-effective. If more than two rails are being used between posts, either initially or potentially in the future, it is a better decision to use full height rail supports. In addition, mounting the full height rail supports on the post is a little easier than installing two 7" high supports.
Q: Can you install the GuardRite Light Duty rails to a wall?
A: Yes. By using our standard rail supports brackets you can anchor the rails to a building wall.
Q: Can the rails be removable?
A: Yes. The rails will fit snugly inside the rails support and on top of the steel angle without being attached to the angle with a screw. In this case, the rails can be lifted out of the brackets for easy access to the area.
Q: Can the rails be painted?
A: We do not recommend that they be painted.
Q: Do I need to fill out a survey?
A: When measuring for this product, you may want to use a grid sheet to layout your application to help determine the proper number of columns and rails are needed to accommodate your application.
Installation
Q: Why are there four holes in the base plate but you only supply two anchors?
A: The GuardRite Light Duty barrier system design does not require more than two anchors to be installed. Additional anchors will not increase the overall strength or stability of the system.
Four holes are provided in the base plate to allow for installation flexibility in case there are tight spots or steel obstructions in the concrete floor. The base plate may be slightly above floor level where it is not anchored down.
